9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.
11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.
My thoughts:
God had a plan in mind when he gathered the waters into one place letting dry ground appear. I know that in the Florida Everglades, there are types of vegetation and types of animals that thrive in marsh land, but I don’t think they grow corn there; and I know a whale could not survive in that environment. We would have a vastly different earth if God had chosen to disperse water and “ground” in equal parts throughout the globe.
Clearly God separated the land from the waters to prepare a place where the land could sustain all the vegetation he had in mind. And what wisdom is shown in his arrangement for it to be self-sustaining.
I think of the mighty oak tree—created with the capacity to produce the acorn and thus self perpetuate. One creation, eternal reproduction. God’s presence in everything we know. Wow!
