The Table of Nations
1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.
2 The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.
3 And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.
4 And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.
K.J.V. Bible Text
The subject of Genesis Chapter 10, as stated in verse 1 is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah’s sons, who themselves had sons after the flood. I looked at the whole chapter and realized there’s a lot of detail involved in their stories.
So all that detail doesn’t overwhelm me, I’ve decided to take Chapter 10 in very small bites, but even in the tiny piece of the chapter that is today’s reading, we learn the names of those of Noah’s descendants who were in the line of his son Japheth for another two generations.
We also learn that Japheth’s son Javan was the father of several sons who as seafarers would later spread out into new territories, each with its own language.
This causes me to remember that in those days people lived a long time and these generations had many more years than generations of today to accomplish God’s purpose for them.
