The Golden Compass - A Warning To Christians - Boycott This Movie
I recently received an email forward about The Golden Compass, a movie coming out this December, calling for all Christians to boycott this movie over atheist themes in it. I am usually one to dump forwards in the trash immediately, but this one go my wife’s attention, and I decided to research it and put it to rest. Usually when I research forwards, I find them to be completely inaccurate and unworthy of attention. This one, however, is very different.
The forward sent me to a Snopes.com, a site dedicated to finding the truth about rumors. The present the rumor:
Claim: The 2007 film The Golden Compass is based on a series of books with anti-religious themes.
Status: True.
And they support their claim with many examples. Once again, I have seen many such sites that provide false information, so I examined the claims about the books the movie is based on, and I went to Wikipedia to read the outline of the books and see if a less biased source agreed with the claims being made. To me, the books’ outline made a strong case to support the claims made against this movie.
The Golden Compass is the anti-Narnia since it is designed use a captivating fantasy story to gently lead young people to the conclusion that there is no God (other than the ones humans have made up) and all churches and religions oppress humanity. The Golden Compass movie is toned down significantly from the book to play well to an unsuspecting audience. The hope is that there will be a surge to purchase the full trilogy of books for Christmas presents by parents who saw the movie with their children and thought that it was a nice fantasy. However, the books (and thus the movie) are dangerous in the way that they lull their readers away from faith. And, the books culminate in the main characters killing God (who is clearly shown not to be the creator, but just a powerful angel who everyone worships as the creator.)
The Catholic League has issued a boycott of this movie, and I am sure that many other religious groups will as well as we approach the release next month. Please do your research before seeing this movie or buying these books for your children.
